What is a vision?

Vision is the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom. Your vision is your why or purpose –it’s what drives you to keep going despite challenges or obstacles.

Why do you need a vision?

Without a vision or purpose for our lives, we tend to wander and are easily shifted or discouraged by the winds of life. A vision statement gives you clarity and can be a filter to help you determine what you will start, stop, continue, or not do.

How do I create a vision?

We have developed a simple process that has come from learnings from doing sister circles with friends and reading different articles and books.

Step 1: Think about what you have accomplished so far in life? What has brought you the most joy or you are the proudest of? What do you love about who you are and what you have done?

Step 2: Ask a few friends why they love you? What have you done that makes them proud of you?

Step 3: Look for patterns in what you love about yourself and your life and what the people you care about love about you and what you have done? This should give you a sense of your natural gifts and purpose.

Step 4: Write your vision statement. It is one to two sentences that conveys your purpose (what, why), values (how), path (how) and impact (what).

A few examples:

"My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style" -- Maya Angelou

“To be a teacher. And to be known for inspiring my students to be more than they thought they could be.” –Oprah Winfrey

"Live and empower others to live an authentic life with joy, love and purpose so that we all see the best in ourselves and each other. " - Evelia Davis

Step 5: Think about taking actions and setting intentions. Vision without action is just a dream. Visualize your life 3 years from now and write down 3 things that will be true. Think about and write down 3 things that you have to do in the short term (3-6 months) and long term (6months – year+) for the vision to be true.

What is a vision board?

A vision board is a visual representation of your purpose, dreams, inspirations, and values. It can be a collage of pictures, words, affirmations, scriptures, objects, and images.

How do I create a vision board?

This is the easy and fun part.

Supplies:

Magazines, books, craft paper

Glue or tape

Posterboard or canvas

Scissors

Find images and words that fit your vision and begin to place them on your board.

How do I organize vision board?

You can organize however you want. A few suggestions to get you started:

  • By action or intent
  • By dream, vision or purpose
  • By inspiration or motivation
  • However your creative energy leads you

Manifest, Pray & Meditate

Last, but most important is for you to place your vision in a prominent place so you see it, read it and say it out loud every day. Each step you make forward toward your purpose and goals is a win.
